Chandi Devi Temple is one of the most popular and important Hindu temples in the holy city of Haridwar, Uttarakhand in India. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Maa Chandi, a form of goddess Parvati.

Brief History of the Temple:

The history of the present temple dates back to 20th century. It was built by king Suchat Singh, king of Kashmir in 1929. However, people believe that Adi Guru Shankaracharya installed the main murti (idol) of Chandi Devi inside the temple in the 8th century.

Mythology of Chandi Devi Temple:

As per mythology, two demons(Asura) named Shumbh and Nishumbh captured the heaven, which is the kingdom of Lord Indra. After they declared themselves as kings of heaven, Shumbh got attracted by the divine beauty of goddess Parvati. He whished to marry her. After goddess Parvati refused his proposal, he sent two demons Chand – Mund to Goddess Parvati. The Goddess created Chandika Avatar, a powerful incarnation of goddess Parvati, to slain Chand and Mund. The angered Chandika Devi killed Chand and Mund and eventually Shumbh and Nishumbh. The place where those demons were killed by Chandi Devi, is Neel Parvat. So devotees built this beautiful temple on the hill, dedicated to Chnadika Devi.

Significance of the Temple:

The temple hold a great importance among Hindus. Thousands of devotees come to Haridwar and visit the temple, especially during the festivals of Chandi Chaudas and Navratra and the Kumbha Mela of Haridwar. Devotees worship here to seek the blessings of the goddesses Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi, who are believed to fulfill the wishes of true devotees.

The temple is built in a beautiful location. It is situated on the top of Neel Parvat on the Eastern summit of the Shivalik Hills. These hills are the southern most mountain chain of the great Himalayas. The temple is also known as Neel Parvat Teerth because of it’s location. It is one of the Panch Tirth (Five Pilgrimages) in the city of Haridwar. The temple is located at an height of 2900 m.

How to Reach Chandi devi Temple Haridwar:

To reach the Chandi Devi Temple, there are two options, on foot and ropeway. It takes 45 minutes to reach the temple, if you are planning to trek. Reaching the temple by ropeway takes just 5 to 10 minutes. The temple is 6 km away from Haridwar. Nearest railway station and bus station to Chandi Devi Temple is Haridwar. Nearest airports to Haridwar are Jolly Grant Airport (38 kms) via NH 7 and NH34 and Delhi(225 kms).
