How to Reach Mussoorie

Mussoorie neither have a railway station nor an airport. Dehradun is the nearest city which has a railway station and an airport (Jolly Grant airport). Mussoorie, often called as “The Queen of Hills”, is perched at a height of 1880 meters from the sea level.

It comes under Dehradun district of Uttarakhand. It is about 35 km away from state capital Dehradun, which takes about an hour to reach depending on the traffic. As there is no railway station in Mussoorie, Dehradun railway station is the nearest railhead here. There’s another town just next to Mussoorie known as Landour. Moreover, Landour is a military cantonment, which is a part of the ‘greater Mussoorie’, an extension of Mussoorie.

How to Reach Mussoorie from Dehradun by Bus

If you don’t have a personal vehicle, there are many local buses going from Dehradun to Mussoorie frequently. Mussoorie – Dehradun bus stand is situated just outside the railway station of Dehradun. The bus fare is very affordable which is around 50 rupees per person. So one can choose a bus depending on their convenience.

If you are a group of friends, you can get a taxi from Dehradun to Mussoorie which will cost you around INR 700 – 1000 rupees. You can split this cab fare.

3 Ways to Reach Mussoorie

By Road

Mussoorie lies at a distance of 35 km from Dehradun. Dehradun is 290 km from Delhi. From Dehradun, it takes more than 1 hour to reach here if there is less to moderate traffic. However, during new year and 31st December, Dehradun – Mussoorie road witnesses a lot of traffic. This significantly increases the time to reach there.

Since Mussoorie is a very popular hill station in Uttarakhand, it is well-linked with all the major cities of India via many private and government bus services.

Furthermore, buses from ISBT Kashmere Gate, Delhi are easily available to Dehradun. You can book car or taxi to Mussoorie from Delhi or Dehradun. They will take you to Dehradun from Delhi in 7-8 hours depending on the traffic because the traffic is worst in this route during weekends. Dehradun is 279.4 km from Delhi and Mussoorie is 35 km away from Dehradun.

By Train

Dehradun railway station, at a distance of 35 km is the nearest railway station. In fact, this is a very active railway station with regular connectivity to New Delhi and other major cities of north India. It takes 6-7 hours to reach Dehradun from Delhi via train then it takes one more hour further to reach Mussoorie.

There are many trains from New Delhi to Dehradun, such as the Shatabdi Express, Jan Shatabdi Express, Nizamuddin AC Special, and Mussoorie Express. Mussoorie Express and the Nizamuddin AC Special are overnight trains. All these trains pass through Haridwar. These trains take approximately 5.5 to 6 hours.

By Air

Jolly Grant is the nearest airport located on the Rishikesh-Dehradun State Highway. It is 22 km away from Dehradun and 57 km from Mussoorie. This airport has regular connectivity with New Delhi. The flights are frequent. It takes around 2 hours to reach Dehradun from Delhi via flight.

After reaching Jolly Grant airport, you can hire a cab to reach Mussoorie, which is almost 30 km (1 hour) away from Dehradun. Uttarakhand Transport Corporation buses are also available from Jolly Grant airport gate.
