Sattal or Sat Tal is a group of seven inter-connected natural freshwater lakes located in Nainital district of Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Nainital is a world famous tourist destination famous for its many natural lakes and Sattal is one of them. It is at a distance of 13 km from Bhimtal and 23 km from Nainital.

Sattal has 7 lakes which are all inter-connected. The names of the seven lakes are:

  1. Purna Tal
  2. Ram Tal
  3. Sita Tal
  4. Laxman Tal
  5. Nal Damyanti Tal
  6. Sukh Tal
  7. and Garud Tal

Who Should Visit Sattal near Nainital:

Sattal is a quiet place which is far different than a typically crowded hill station. Its calmness and rich fauna makes it a great destination for the honeymoon couples, corporate groups, nature lovers, and families. It you are seeking solitude and want to spend some time in a quiet place away from the crowd, then Sattal is the place for you. The British used to compare the eye-catching beauty of Sattal with the Westmorland of England because of their similarities.

Activities to do:

  • Boating: One can enjoy boating and kayaking here. The lake is surrounded by pine and oak tress, which makes boating a divine experience.
  • Camping and Bonfire: The locals organize camps near the lake amidst the forest, which gives visitors a great opportunity to get closer to the mother nature.
  • Fishing: Fishing is an another activity that tourists are allowed to do. The best thing is if you catch a fish you are allowed to take it home with you.
  • Bird Watching: The lakes in Nainital district are home to many local and migratory birds. They have more than 500 species of local and migratory birds such as red-billed blue magpie, kingfishers, blue-throated and brown-headed barbets. These birds come here to take shelter from the harsh cold of the greater Himalayan region and migrate to the lower Himalayan region.

Subhash Dhara:

Subhash Dhara is a natural freshwater spring that originates from the dense oak and pine forest here. This spring attracts many visitors for its crystal clear fresh water.

Butterfly Museum of Sattal:

The butterfly museum of Sattal is a center of attraction for many tourists. Nainital district has over 525 species of butterflies and over 11,000 species of moths, beetles, bugs and other insects.

Best Time to Visit Sattal:

  • The months of early March to May and December to early February are the best time to visit here.
  • We recommend you to avoid the monsoons and ask about the road and weather conditions before visiting.

Note: Please do not know wrappers and plastic bottles in or near the lake. Only use dustbins to throw trash. Help Uttarakhand tourism to keep all hill stations clean.

Staying and Food Options in Sattal:

  • There are a handful of budget and mid range hotels and accomodation options available in Sattal. One can also stay in government KMVN guest houses. The hotel prices drop significantly during off-season.
  • There is a small market in Sattal, where many local Dhabas, restaurants and street food options are available. You can find typical North Indian, pahadi food and fast food such as Momos and Chowmein.
  • A few hotels also have inside restaurants to save some time for more fun.

How to Reach Sattal or Sat Tal:

Sattal is 23 km away from Nainital and 29 km from Kathgodam. While you are in Nainital, you can visit Sattal by sharing or booking a cab. It takes about an hour to reach here from Nainital.

By Air:

Pantnagar airport is the nearest airport from Sattal and Nainital. After that, one can hire a cab or take a bus to Haldwani or Kathgodam and then a bus or a taxi further to Nainital or Sattal. There are many buses in Haldwani and Kathgodam bus stops going to Nainital.

By Train:

Nainital is 36 km away from Kathgodam railway station and Sattal is 29 km from Kathgodam. One has to book a taxi to visit Sattal directly from Kathgodam of Haldwani. It is the last railway station and from here one has to take a bus or a taxi to go further. There are plenty of buses and cabs available in Kathgodam going to Nainital. Just outside the railway station, there is a bus station from where one can find a bus to Nainital and Sattal.

By Bus:

Many private and government buses are available from ISBT Dehradun and ISBT Anand Vihar Delhi to Nainital, Haldwani and Kathgodam. It takes more than 7 hours to reach Haldwani from Delhi and further one hour to reach Nainital. From Nainital, further one hour drive will take you to Sattal.
