Garkha is a lush green fertile region which includes a large group of villages in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand state. The region is located just in front of Askot region, which is popular for Askot Wildlife Sanctuary.

This whole region comes under the Kanalichhina development block, Didihat tehsil in Pithoragarh district. Many villages come under this region. The whole area of Garkha is spread between Dhanlek peak, Bagarihat, and Titari on the bank of Kali Ganga river on Indo-Nepal border.

What Garkha Region Has to Offer:

In Kumaoni language, the word Garkha means “The herds of cows”. Garkha is perched on the mountains on the northern slopes of western Himalayas. This area is well known among local people for its scenic beauty. It offers the majestic views of many mighty peaks of Himalaya such as Panchachuli, Chhiplakot, and Annapurna. The region is rich in flora and fauna. The place is surrounded by Pine forests and also full of Rhododendron flower trees(Burans), Myrica and Quercus.

Main Villages of Garkha Region:

Many small villages and towns come under Garkha region. Some of them are Bhagichaura, Ogla, Singli,Barakot, Jethigaun, Majhera, Mailmuna, Sunakot, Digara, Udma, Agaon, Pantgaon, Naret, Ojhagaon, Bhulkhet, Dangti, Dungara, Dokuna, Pasma, Chausal, Bagarihat and Titari.

Brief History of Garkha:

The whole region along with Askot and Didihat was once ruled by Rajbars of Askot. The Palace of Rajbars is still present in Askot town. Once the area was also under the Gorkha Kings of Nepal for a long period of time. Historically, the region was the main point of commerce and trading with Bagrihat, Titari, and Jauljibi being the main trading points.

How to Reach:

Garkha is well connected with roads with Ogla being its entry point. It is only 15 km away from Ogla. The town of Ogla is situated in Didihat Tehsil of Pithoragarh district. Ogla is 43 km away from Pithoragarh, 8 km from Askote, 48 km from Dharchula and 11 km from Didihat. The nearest airport to Ogla is at Pantnagar, which is at a distance of 256 km. The nearest railway station is Tanakpur, 190 km away. Buses or taxis to Ogla are available from Pithoragarh, Tanakpur Dharchula, Kathgodam and Haldwani.
