
‘Divine Life Society in Rishikesh’
The highly revered Sivananda Ashram also famous as ‘Divine Life Society’ is located near Ram Jhula in Rishikesh. It was founded by the great Hindu saint, Swami Sivananda who stayed here for more than three decades. The organization’s work was recognized by former President APJ Abdul Kalam Azad, who graced the ashram with his presence.
The Sivananda Ashram is divided into four sections namely, Bhakti section, the Vedantic section, The Yogic section, and the Ladies section. The ashram conducts Yoga/Meditation classes that are held on all days leaving Sundays. There are separate timings for men and women. Morning classes are for men and evening classes are for women. One can enroll for a two months course here. The ashram specializes in Iyengar Yoga.

Mission of Divine Life Society:
The Divine Life Society aims at bringing the world-wide revival of spirituality. The organization publishes several books, pamphlets, and magazines that deal scientifically with all the aspects of Yoga and Vedanta, universal religion and philosophy and ancient medicine. It holds cultural and spiritual conferences and discourses. To meet its objective, the society has established several training centres for practicing Yoga and the revival of true culture.
History of Sivananda Ashram:
Sivananda Ashram was founded in the year 1936 by saint Sivananda, one of the great Yogis of the last century. He was the pioneer for bringing forth the learnings of Hinduism in the West in the 1930s and for introducing the science of Yoga.
Swami Sivananda made many followers in the west and encouraged them to practice Yoga. He often quoted that “A bit of practice is better than tons of theory”.

The stellar views of the Himalayan ranges at the backdrop is a treat to the eyes. One can enjoy photography or explore the nearby areas. Some of the places to visit near Sivananda ashram are Ram Jhula, Laxman Jhula, Trimbakeshwar Ashram, Gita Bhawan, Swargashram and Parmarth Niketan.
How to Reach Sivananda Ashram:
Sivananda Ashram is situated on the main Rishikesh road, connecting Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula. The ashram is located at a distance of 3 km from Rishikesh, on the way to Badrinath near Ram Jhula. There is a hospital on the opposite side of the road.
The ashram can also be reached within 10 minutes by taking the flight of steps from Ram Jhula. You can also hire a taxi, bus or take the auto rickshaw (Tuk-tuk) to reach here. Rishikesh railway station at 6 km away is the nearest railhead. Jolly Grant airport at 10 km away is the closest air connectivity.
