Yamunotri

Yamunotri Dham is the source of the Yamuna River and one of the four holy sites of “Char Dham Yatra” (Pilgrimage). This dham is blessed with amazing natural beauty and charm. It is situated at an altitude of  approximately 3,293 meters (10,804 ft) at the foot-hill of Kalind Parvat in the Garhwal Himalayas and located approximately 30 kilometers north of Uttarkashi in the state Uttarakhand. The Indo-China border is not very far away from here. The temple is usually the first site to visit for the “Char Dham Yatra“.

Attractions:

There is a beautiful water fall located back of the temple. One upwards there is the frozen lake on top of Kalind Parvat is the origin of holy river Yamuna. The main attraction of the Yamunotri temple is the hot water source. There are many hot water sources coming out of the mountains. There is the Divya Shila, which is the stone placed before the temple and it is a ritual to worship it before entering the temple. Near Divya Shila there is a kund called as Suryakund is the most important Kund(pond) and the temperature is about 195 degrees Fahrenheit.

The kund has special sound called “Om sound”. Water is so hot that Devotees cook rice and potatoes, tied in a cloth to offer at the shrine by dipping them in these hot water springs. Water from Suryakund flows in to the Gaurikund which was built by Jamunabai and in the memory named as Jamunabai reservoir. Gaurikund water is comparatively cold, so devotees can bathe in the pond. The temple of Yamuna, on the left bank of the Yamuna, was constructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. The deity is made of black marble.

Best Time To Visit Yamunotri:

Yamunotri has overall cold climate. Summers here are pleasant with temperature ranges within 6°C to 20°C and May-June are the warmest months. Winters during October to March are very cold and have temperature near zero and are characterized by heavy snowfalls and heavy rainfall. This season is not suited for traveling or any outdoor activities, notably December and January. Best time to visit Yamunotri are during May to June and September to November.
