Kashi Vishwanath Temple

Vishwanath Temple or Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the most famous and ancient Hindu temples. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is situated on the banks of the river Bhagirathi in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. The place offers the breath-taking view of the river surrounded by might Himalayan mountains. The temple is situated in the center of the town and is visited by Chaar Dham yatra devotees.

The present temple was renovated in the year 1857 A.D. by the queen of Tehri Maharani Khaneti. The image of Sakshi Gopal and the sage Markandeya are kept in the temple.

Mythology Of Vishwanath Temple:

According to the Puranas, Sage Markandeya was cursed with a short span of life. He was at the Markandeya temple stands, where the present temple complex is situated. His death was near, so Lord Yamaraja came to take his soul away, Sage Markandeya went and embraced Lord Vishwanath very humbly. After seeing this affection and love, Sage Markandeya was blessed with a long life. Sage Markandeya was cursed to live only till 16 years. But after this incident Lord Shiva blessed him to be eternally young like a sixteen years old.

Inside Vishwanath Temple:

An idol of God Shiva is present inside the temple immersed in deep meditation. The 56 cm tall Shivlingam has a tilt to the south. In the sanctum sanctorum, there are idols of Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha. An idol Bull Nandi is kept in outer chamber of the temple.

Shakti Temple (Just Opposite to Kashi Vishwanath Temple):

Shakti Temple is situared just opposite to the Vishwanath temple. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati.

Tere is an old, huge and heavy trishul (trident), which is 6 meters in height and 90 cms at the bottom. It is believed that this Trishul was thrown at the devils by Goddess Durga.
