Clock Tower

Clock Tower, locally famous as Ghanta Ghar, is one of the most important landmarks in Dehradun. It is an architectural marvel that stands in utmost grandeur in the midst of the bustling bazaars of Dehradun. The building of the tower has six faces and each face has a clock installed on it. It was formerly known as Balbir Tower.

It is encircled by the commercial centers of the city and several small shops. One can see the names of several freedom fighters engraved on a golden plate here. Presently, the It is un-functional and is under renovation. But there was a time when the chime of the clock could be heard from far-off distances from the commercial center.

The design of Clock Tower is inspired by the rare-Greco styled architecture. Clock Tower’s unique hexagonal shape gives it’s a distinguished feature. The tower is 85 meters long. There is a gold plate on which the names of several freedom fighters are written.

History of Ghanta Ghar

The Clock Tower earlier known as Balbir Tower is one of the celebrated monuments of Dehradun. It was built to commemorate India’s Independence. The foundation of the Ghanta Ghar was laid on July 2, 1948, by then Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Sarojini Naidu. It took about 5 years to complete the establishment and the tower was finally inaugurated by Lal Bahadur Shastri in the year 1953.

How to reach Clock Tower

Clock Tower is a popular landmark in Dehradun situated near Parade Ground. Since it is in the city center, one can easily reach here from any part of the city. Available options are:

  • Buses from Rajpur, D.L. Road, Clement Town and Nalapani run towards this place daily.
  • Vikram no. 1, 2, 3 and 5 also travels all the way up to this place.
  • Dehradun railway station at 2 km away is the nearest railhead to Ghanta ghar.
  • Jolly Grant airport at 26 km away is the closest air connectivity.
