History of Haldwani

Mughal historians have mentioned about Haldwani. They have written that Gyan Chand was the king of Chand dynasty in the 14th century. He visited the Sultanate of Delhi and Mughals gave him the regions of Terai-Bhabhar to rule.

But later, Mughals were trying to expand their kingdom. They tried to capture the hills of Uttarakhand. But they did not succeed because of difficult terrains. They were not habitual of hill areas.

In 1856, the Britishers captured this area. Then Sir Henry Ramsay became the Commissioner of Kumaon. During the historic Indian Rebellion of 1857, the rebels of Rohilkhand were able to capture the area for a very short period of time.

But Commissioner, Sir Henry Ramsay declared martial law and the region again came under the Britishers in 1858. Sir Henry Ramsay constructed railway track from Bareilly to Kathgodam.

On 24 April 1884, the first train arrived at Haldwani from Lucknow. The railway track was further extended up to Kathgodam.

On September 21, 1942, Haldwani-Kathgodam Municipal Council was established. It is the second largest Municipal Council in Uttarakhand after Haridwar Municipal Council.
